TRAI favours number portability - 30th Apr 2008

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday said it was in favour of implementing nationwide ‘mobile number portability’ (MNP) by June 2009. It has now asked the Department of Telecommunications(DoT) to select an operator who will be licensed for providing and operating end-to-end MNP solution.

Forwarding its ‘draft request for proposal’ to the DoT, TRAI has recommended that the MNP clearing house administrator should be licensed through a competitive bidding process.

TRAI has said that a neutral third party should own and operate MNP clearing house and logically centralised data base. The company should not have more than 10 per cent equity directly or indirectly in any of the service providers and vice versa. The FDI limit for the company will be as per service licence conditions of 74 per cent.
